Every moment is… (2023)

Parents, mothers in particular, are often told some version of the idiom “cherish every moment because every moment is precious” during their children’s baby years.  And of course, there is a great deal of love, joy and fulfilment in raising a child.  But it can also be exhausting, stressful, painful and a time of intense self-doubt and fear. 

“Every moment is..” is a sculptural work exploring the complexities of parenting a baby.  It consists of 56 bricks of beech, stacked in varying configurations, but most commonly with a central tower.  Each brick is engraved with extracts of WhatsApp conversations between my husband and me during our child’s first year in which one, or both of us, has had a night of interrupted sleep.
