Meditation Music

Acts of care for the self or for others can be deeply repetitive and monotonous – sometimes, they feel interminable.  But they also form the basis for a deep relationship with oneself or another.  A form of paying close attention.  An intense “staying alongside,” regardless of the outcome.

Inspired by the work of Professor Lisa Baraitser, this series of works ask: “How might repetitious acts of care, underpaid, undervalued, categorised as “non-productive” within our society be reframed as a time of mattering?”

Through a series of workshops, I propose to create a sound-based artwork provisionally entitled “Meditation Music”.  This artwork would be formed from sounds collected by participants during the giving or receiving of repetitive acts of care e.g. cooking for their family, soothing a baby, changing a nappy, cleaning toys or baby equipment, changing linen.

The sound work above is an example of the type of output that would be created through each set of workshops - this piece is made entirely from sounds collected whilst doing the laundry.
